Biogeographically, the Geopark belongs to Central Yunnan Plateau Subregion, Southwestern China Region, Eastern Asian Kingdom. Historical information and survey indicate that within the Geopark area there are 185 vertebrate species (including 42 beast species), 87 bird species, 32 reptile species, and 12 amphibian species, and 12 fresh water fish species. Of the animal species, 7 beast species and 8 bird species are class two national protected species. The Geopark is one of the major habitats of Chrysolophus amherstiae, a threatened bird species listed in IUCN Redbook 1988.

In March, 1991, a blind cave fish species endemic to the Geopark, Triplophysa shilinensis Chen et Yang sp. Nov. was found in a karst cave adjacent to Weiboyi village. It is the eleventh cave fish species and also the fourth Triplophysa species found in China.

The Triplophysa shilinensis, maximum body length is 61.0mm, living in the subterranean river within the cave. This fish species shows genetic relationship with other two Triplophysa species found in Gejiu karst area and Nanpan River. It is believed that they may all share a common ancestor that used to distribute widely in southeastern Yunnan. Because of later regional uplift, these fishes were isolated in different cave system and experienced a unique evolution.

Within the Geopark there are two bat species: Rhinolophus ferrumequinum tragatus Hodgson, and Hipposideros armiger Hodgson. They live individually or in group in caves. Rhinolophus ferrumequinum tragatus Hodgson weighs 10-20 grams;forearm length is 55-60mm; back is in shallow browned color and belly in gray browned color. Hipposideros armiger Hodgson weighs 60-65grams; forearm length is 90-95mm; back is in browned color and belly in browned color.
