The Stone Forest Geopark enjoys typical subtropical plateau dry and wet monsoon climate. The overall feature can be summarized as“not very cold in winter, not very hot in summer, and all seasons are springs, and distinct dry and wet seasons" . Usually from May to October is the rainy season, and from November to the next April is the dry season. The annual average temperature since 1965 is 16.2℃. July is the hottest month with average temperature 20.8℃,and January is the coldest month with an average temperature 8.2℃. The average annual precipitation is 967.9mm, and 80-88 percent of the precipitation received in the rainy season. Local average humidity is 75 % .
Climate changes obviously with altitude, generally north tropical climate is found in low altitude area and temperate climate in high altitude area. Specifically, in 1500-1600m altitude river valley, the climate is equivalent to the mid-subtropical with an annual temperature of 16-16.6℃; in 1600-1800m basin and gentle hill county, the climate is equivalent to north subtropical, with an annual temperature of 14.8-15.9℃; in 1800-2150m mountain and semi-mountain area, there is temperate climate with an annual temperature of 12.8-14.7℃; and areas above 2150m elevation, the climate is equivalent to that of mid- temperate, with an annual average temperature lower than 12.7℃.
Hydrologically the Stone Forest Geopark is part of the Nanpan River drainage area, and Nanpan River is in turn a major tributary of the upper reaches of the Pearl River. The water body of the Geopark consists of both surface and underground waters.
Bajiang River is the local trunk river that winds its way from north to south through the Lunan basin, receiving water along the course from subterranean rivers and springs such as Heillongtan (black dragon pool), Bailongtan (white dragon pool), etc. in the east side.
Rising from Shantoushang in the north (in the vicinity of Naigu Stone Forest), Bajiang River flows southwards for more than 30km. It traverses the county town (Lufuzhen) and a number of villages such as Beida Village and Lumeiyi Village before ending at the southern extreme, boundary between counties of Shilin and Yiliang, where the river merges into the water of Nanpan River as waterfall- the Dadieshui Waterfall. The waterfall is 54m wide and 87.8m high. Tumbling water generates immense mist and deafening voice.
The regional prevailing wind is in southwest direction and second in south, average speed is 3.13m/second.
