South China Karst World Heritage Site and Mammoth Cave National Park Signed Sister Park Agreement

13 Aug 2009

On August 13, 2009, South China Karst World Heritage Site and Mammoth Cave National Park of the USA established an informal sister park agreement to further mutually beneficial cooperation in Beijing.

The purpose of the“sister park”relationship is to promote international cooperation and support for the mutual benefit of both parks and to enrich the experience and training of the personnel of both parks through projects of international cooperation. The relationship allows the sisters to benefit by sharing experiences and approaches to collaboration, including local efforts to work with gateway communities, regional and local economies, friends groups and partner organizations. This may be accomplished primarily through the exchange of managerial, technical and professional knowledge, information, data, technology, training, and experience.

Mammoth Cave National Park became a national park in 1941 and is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States. The park was designated to protect and preserve the extensive limestone caverns and associated karst topography, scenic river ways, old-growth and secondary forests, and other biological resources within the 52,830 acre area. The park was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981 and as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990. The park and Biosphere Reserve are home to one of the world’s best studied karst systems and to the longest known cave system in the world. The park’s caves and rivers exhibit world-class biological diversity and support several rare, threatened, and endangered species.

South China Karst World Heritage Site was enshrined in 2007 because of its unrivaled diversity of its karst forms and features. The site consists of three sub-areas which are superb and definitive examples of different kinds of karst landscapes: Libo Karst, Shilin Karst, and Wulong Karst. The Shilin Karst is world renown for its pinnacle karst or stone forests. These serve as a definitive world example of pinnacle karst development and are unsurpassed in their variety.
