From November 16 to 18, 2018, Dr. TaDej (Director of the Karst Research Institute of Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRCSAZU)), Dr. Martin (Deputy Director), microbiologist YaNi, YiGo (science editor of Delo), Professor Liu Hong (Associate Researcher at International Joint Research Center for Karst Yunnan University) and other karst geologists visited Stone Forest Scenic Area to carry out investigation on geological relic sites.

During the three-day investigation, the experts conducted measurements and sampling observation of stratigraphic micro-section of the stone peaks and Daoshiyan Area of Stone Forest Nature Reserve, and analyzed the rock structure, mineral composition and dissolution degree to obtain the cause and changing process of stone pillars in Stone Forest. After field investigation, experts showed the geological research achievements on Stone Forest karst for more than 20 years in videos, pictures, and books, which greatly enriched the geological science knowledge about the World Natural Heritage of Stone Forest karst.

As early as 1995, Slovenian karst geological researchers and geological researchers with Yunnan Institute of Geography (later renamed International Joint Research Center for Karst Yunnan University) have carried out karst geological research in Stone Forest Scenic Area. In December 2013, Research Center of Shilin Scenic Area Administration Bureau, International Joint Research Center for Karst Yunnan University, and ZRCSAZU Karst Research Institute formally established friendly research partnership based on the principles of experience exchange, technical training, and results sharing, aiming at joint research and achievement utilization of three parties, common interests of serving sustainable and harmonious development between men and nature, and enhancement of research cooperation and information exchanges.
